작가의 용어로 말하자면 “Crystallized from painting to drawing”이다.

Spectacles of Lines and Time – Kim JongSook’s Artificial Landscapes

by Kim Bok-young (Art Critic & Doctor of Philosophy)

1.
Since 2006, for her cycle Artificial Landscapes, Kim Jong-sook transcribed folk paintings featuring plum blossom, lotus flowers, butterflies, and Gyomje Jeong Seon’s Panoramic View of Diamond Mountains, then applied transparent and translucent white, yellow, red, and dark brown Swarovski Crystals of about two millimeters in diameter. Kim recreates our old paintings’ brush lines by emphasizing them with luxurious of crystal-dotted landscapes, and ground in Obang-saek. (Obang is the five directions constituting the basis od our ancestors’ understanding of all things under the sun: east, west, south, north, and center.)
Kim is versed in the silkscreen technique, applied to her work’s ground. After transcribing the whole or part of an original to her canvas, Kim glues crystals to flow and rhythm of their lines. Unlike original lines rendered by brushes, these artificial crystal granules, or pseudo-gems, and her mature, artisan spirit. They help reproduce birds, flowers, topography, the physical aspect of a mountain, and moreover, the original’s characteristic features. Faithful to the original, she interprets original liens through her own distinctive interpretation. Like Gustav Klimt, who generated hypnotic light through ritualistic, metallic light, there in Byzantine gold decoration, and added it to his erotic drawings.
Kim’s recent work shows an ensemble of delicate, unrestricted, flowing lines of originals, and the gatherings of artificial lines re-contextualized by the artist. There is no distinction between the former and the latter beyond cultural context these lines demand each other equally. Flexible line of the originals become a base for the understanding of her artificial lines. Kim’s aritificial lines have their own role in generating independent rhythms. The thems Kim addresses is ensemble, between the paradigms of these lines….

2.
I have to explain why these two types of lines should exist in the same plane. The artificial lines are an outgrowth od a specific subject, living in the 2000s. Alternatively, the ground lines the artist appropriated from folk paintings and traditional landscapes were created hundreds of years ago. Jeong Seon’s Panoramic View of Diamond Mountains, for example, was rendered about two hundreds years ago. Why did she summon these two kinds of line to the same canvas? How can we judge this hybridization of lines produced through two different subjects? Essentially, these two kinds of lines are blended and created by two different subjects.
Critical discourse regarding the West may not be helpful in addressing this. Discussions about ‘parody’, ‘destruction of the original’, ‘re-contextualization’, or ‘demise of the author’ are perhaps inappropriate for dealing with Kim’s work. These terms are meaningful only in the dictionaries of the postmodernists and deconstructionists, or when addressing images of Western consumer society. The following two conditions could be met, to apply critical discourse to Kim’s recent work, and elucidate the problem of lines and subjects in her work. One is recognizing Kim’s work involves a process of transcribing an original (like Jeong Seon’s Panoramic View of Diamond Mountains) to denote the reason for her being. To overturn the oriental, she has to leave its marks or traces. The other is, realizing the artist must create a simulacra as an image without the substance or qualities of the original or its traces. But Kim’s work does not meet these two conditions.
Instead, the artist employed Jeong Seon’s original painting through silkscreen, to correspond to her own artificial lines. She never intended to vaporize the original. According to her artist’s statement of 2007, she “aims to reinterpret traditional mountain-and-water paintings, into landscapes of our times, and to imagine the future, based on an understanding of the past, without being confined to it”. To do this she preserves aspects of the original, without deleting the original, to leave simulacra.
The concept of simulacra, defined by Plato and redefined by Jean Baudrillard, cannot properly be applied to her work. If the two abovementioned conditions could be established the properties of each text – Gyeomje’s work and Kim’s subject – would not be conspicuous. As Marcel Duchamp deleted traits of Leonardo da Vinci through his reproduction of Mona Lisa, and Robert Rauschenberg did the same with his Erased de Kooning Drawing, Kim modifies the originals she employs. The origin of this attempt can be found in Pablo Picasso’s parody of Diego Velazquez’s Las Meninas (The Maids of honor), there in his cubism.
There is no demise of the subject or extinction of the original in Kim’s recent work. Originals coexist with the artist’s subjects. No ‘intertextuality’ (Roland Barthes) can be found in her work. in other words, Kim’s text coexists with Jeong Seon’s. Her work makes ensures a contrast and distinction between two texts remains. There is no erased Joeng Seon, and no erased folk painting, is in her work. Her originals are not dead, but live together in the work, whether as subject or original.

3.
Is there any way of reaing Kim’s work, out of the context of postmodernism? If there is, what is it? The critical essays by Kho Choog-hwan and Hong Kyoung-han who read her work from the perspective of parody and postmodernism were away from the core issue. They saw her way of textual composition from a remote point of view, not from a point of proximity. The proximity point is of course drawing as a gathering of crystallized lines. “Crystallized from painting to drawing” according to the artist. The following is her response to this.

“As a child, the traditional and modern coexisted ironically in my home. There was a mother-of-pearl workshop run by my father nearby. My father used traditional landscape and bird-and-flower paintings as sketches for his large-scale, lacquer mother-of-pearl vessel. The workshop brimmed with traditional paintings, and I used to view the collections of mountain-and-water paintings and folk paintings. I was strangely drawn to the workshop’s mystic, weird atmosphere. There were spectacles of an unreal East long ago. The memories of this time remain vague! In recent years, these memories revived ike a miracle. While viewing a collection of folk paintings, I recalled memories of my childhood days. Strange yet familiar images began filling my canvas. (Excerpts from Artist’s Statement in 2005.)

The above statement candidly reveals why she reached the recent aspects of her work. She intends to embody hybrid images of the traditional and modern, and express image of traditional painting through a contemporary feel by using crystals and pseudo-gems. The core issue in her work is to transform painting into drawing. Her response continues:

“In Transferred Painting, weird rocks and bizarre stones look like people’s appearances. I felt interest in metaphorically drawing the folk painting Geumgang Mountain after appropriating its main images. I transformed these rocks to th figures of our times, and transformed this painting numerical values of the elements I selected from the original. I intended to show Oriental panoramas by linking three scenes of yellow, blue, and red. (Excerpts from the Artist’s Statement in 2006.)

Kim’s line paintings seem rooted in ‘Oriental panorama’, appropriating the concepts of ‘transference’ and ‘selection’. It means shse recreated the ‘Oriental spectacles’ she experienced as a child as works of our times.
Through this attempt, she may bring about the atmosphere of postmodernism and deconstructionism in her work. However, this cannot be a fundamental solution. As she mentioned in her statement, she has to emphasize that “We understand the present past and the past as the present by mediating between the past and the present.” (Artist’s Statement in 2007) We read her work in the frame of neo-historicism to grasp this intention. We also have to note she understands the matter of lines in this context.
The understanding of time is a keyword in neo-historicism. When interpreting neo-expressionism, this keyword includes past incidents and narratives such as myths, religions, wars, and traumas elucidated through present time. For its critical understanding, our criticism has to address the conjunction and disjunction of past and present time. Art sociology should support neo-historicism to address it rightly. It has to elucidate how these two kinds of time is in conjunction or disjunction.

4.
Line is the core of Kim’s work. It refers especially to the crystallized line. This signifier denotes an iconic symptom as space-time, past coexisting with the present, mediating the past and present. The artist expresses the coexistence of the past (Gyeomje’s brushstokes) and the present (Kim’s artificial lines), embraced sd evidence of ‘similarity’ and ‘extension’. These lines all signify time linking past to the present. Kim structures it space of time. If the two modes of time are reversed and form identical space-time, it becomes a paradox. Kim Gyeomje’s lines and her own, within the symmetry of time.
In her work, two temporal axes meet for a while. Departing from the past and present, her work recalls the emptiness of time, that is, timelessness. The lines appearing in Kim’s work have the features of timeline crossing over the boundaries between the past and present. These are congealed lines in the boundary of timelessness. These lines are also an extension of past and present time. They are not Euclidean lines but the lines linking time to time and Riemannian lines. In her work, the delicacy and flexibleness of Gyeomje’s vertical brush lines and her crystal lines symbolic of contemporary human’s desire for transparency, flamboyance, and luxuriousness connote the contrasting relationship between past humanistic nature and present de-humanistic nature.
In terms of the signified, two types of lines in her work are otherized each other. The lines are a symbol for fetishism and consumer society. Swarovski she uses for her work’s primary material is to represent contemporary human’s fetishism and kitsch governing their lives. What these two lines connote is characterized by contradiction, hybridization, and disjunction. He work conceals her work’s kitschy trait by the use of Swarovski’s showy appearance, putting importance on the rhetoric of fantastic spectacles. Kim’s fundamental intension lies in this point.
Kim’s recent work presents lines as a visual language in between past and present. In this process, importance is placed on illusion as spectacle, (unrelated to Jean Baudrillard’s simulacra, incidentally). It is an inevitable outgrowth of such a temporal connection. The spectacles that define her work are in no way space-centered, as in deconstruction or postmodernism. These are spectacles derived from a temporal connection. These spectacles exude an aura of the multi-dimensional world of time that exists as a paradox, not as a dualism by postmodernists, between the real and imaginary. It is Kim’s spectacle, in a true sense.
